Cat Urine - Can It Kill You?

There is question whether cat's urine is poisonous. It arises from the fact that cat is a prime predator for mice and rats. It is known that rodents are vector of Leptospirosis, which is a deadly infection. It came from bacteria known as Lectospira type. Symptoms can range from none to mild such as headaches, muscles pains, and fevers to severe with bleeding from the lungs or meningitis. 



So, it is fatal to be infected by this disease. To avoid is a wise thing to do, but is cat is a contributor to this diseases? The answer is yes, but not from eating mice or rats neither their urine. According to studies, cat can acquire this diseases from drinking water that contaminated with rodent's urine, infected soil or mud, or coming into contact with urine from infected animal.

It occurs mostly in fall season near wooded areas or farms. But, it is rare for a cat to be infected by this type of infection. One of the reason is cat do not spent a lot of time near water. But it is not impossible for it to happen.

So, take care of your cats. You can let them play outside of the house but be aware of those places that might be harmful for your lovely cat. Prevention is better than cure.
